Some Days are Perfect...

Some days are just perfect. No, maybe there aren't any great movies to see, or anything of the sort, but some days are still perfect.

When you are woken up at 8:00 a.m. on a summer morning for a game of cricket, you just know you're in for one of those days...

Well, okay, so our cricket isn't really a thing to brag about, I mean c'mon! A T-shaped driveway for a pitch, where the only possible fielding positions are Point, Square-leg and long-on or long-off? Somehow, you get the feeling that scores aren't going to be that high...

Nonetheless, we play. None of us are that great, but hey, who said it isn't fun!

FACT: My team's current test victory record is unbeaten, but with the match closing for that day with the opposing team trailing by three runs for no-loss, I'm not sure whether we'll be able to maintain that record...

So then, we play with our kittens. Well, not so much play as conduct behavioral research (not the vivisection kind!). We can't really decide on names. They're brother and sister, so we had to think of paired names: Jupiter and Artemis? Narcissus and Echo? Osiris and Isis? Surprise, surprise... guess who came up with the names...

FACT: The cat (Felis catus), also known as the domestic cat or housecat to distinguish it from other felines and felids, is a small furry domesticated carnivorous mammal that is valued by humans for its companionship and for its ability to hunt vermin and household pests. Cats have been associated with humans for at least 9,500 years, and are currently the most popular pet in the world. Owing to their close association with humans, cats are now found almost everywhere in the world.

We treat them like lion cubs... Jupiter\Narcissus\Osiris made us proud by hunting and catching a gecko...

The afternoon sun beckoned me... I had to go for a swim... On the way, a visible mass of water droplets or frozen ice crystals suspended in the Earth's atmosphere above the surface of the Earth blocked out this particular sun. Plans of swimming went down the drain. We reached home, and our car battery died... Convenient.

Would you believe it, the clouds had disappeared... Nature sure works in mysterious ways. She prevented us from stopping the car at the club and not being able to start it up again, owing to that dead battery...

SOME RANDOM FACTS:
  1. The surface area of an average-sized brick is 79 cm squared.
  2. According to suicide statistics, Monday is the favored day for self-destruction.
  3. Cats sleep 16 to 18 hours per day.
  4. The three best-known western names in China: Jesus Christ, Richard Nixon, and Elvis Presley.
  5. The word "nerd" was first coined by Dr. Seuss in "If I Ran the Zoo."
  6. Every human spent about half an hour as a single cell.
  7. "Goodbye" came from "God bye" which came from "God be with you."
  8. Kansas state law requires pedestrians crossing the highways at night to wear tail lights.
You know it's a perfect day when you have the time to find all that out...

Hymn of the North Star...

Okay, I know some of you may already have read this, but anyway...

Ae! Irralah! Estrai un Stellai,

Slivren Etsral miel Estellia ai

Adai miæl vellai!

Læn miel veil e vailes miel ceis,

Cerlai miel, Valos un Feaeis.

Avæ mie, Stellaier un Lænai!

A! Irralah! Star of the North,

Thine Sacred Light like Siler Mist

Upon the Worldlings falls.

Bright is thy hair and fair thine skin,

Thy lips, the Nectar of Valos.

Hail thee, Brightest of Stars!

Nostalgia Beckons....

”People seem to get nostalgic about a lot of things they weren't so crazy about the first time around.” – Anonymous

I can’t believe how true this is! Who would have thought I would actually miss some of those crazy times: frantically copying down class work on the morning of the day after it was actually dictated; too busy then, whispering to my friends to write, or getting sent to the Headmistress’ office for throwing a paper rockets around the class!

Ah! The wonder of childhood! Safe and protected in our own little land, unaware of the outside world!

John Betjeman once said, “Childhood is measured out by sounds and smells and sights, before the dark hour of reason grows.”

Alas! The dark hour has begun to grow upon us, but we yet have some time, my friends! I speak, not only to my own friends, but to all who stand at the brink, the thin line between our world and the world of the grownups.

As I say this, memories come pouring down like rain. I know it sounds cliqued, but I understand now what they mean when they say that is seems just yesterday that we were walking through the school gates for the first time, entering those now familiar, but then alien subterranean classrooms to behold a sea of strange new people. Who would have thought then that we would be so close in a few years!

Seasons passed, and with them, we grew older, we learnt new tings: how to count to 100, how to write ‘dog’, ‘cat’ and ‘boy’, and how to draw birds, which to me looked nothing like birds!

As we grew older, the things we learned grew more advanced, and we learnt to hold our own in this school! I think we all still remember those endless ‘break-times’ (and in Class 3, lunchtimes!) flying around on imaginary broomsticks playing Harry Potter’s ‘Quidditch’; the fastest kid in class acting as the Golden Snitch!

And then, before we knew it, we were in ‘Senior School’, thrust again into a new world, this one far more serious. From little wizards on broomsticks, we turned into little Ballacks and Podolskis (which was due to the influence of the 2006 FIFA World Cup!), football-crazy sixthies!

As time grew older, so did we, and before we knew it, these little boys and girls were in Class 9. Little did we know this would be the best till date!

Shaping years, these are called, and our characters were built in the best possible ways. From Iron Maiden and Hitler to Beethoven and Tolkien, we had a wide variety of influences (Hitler being and interest, not an influence!), at least my good friends and I.

We had our good times and our bad. Laughing for eternal moments at imitations of Inspector Clouseau’s ‘I wood laik tu bui a “amsphphespher”’ (I would like to buy a hamburger)! Laughing at teachers (please excuse us!), singing loudly during free periods, the list is endless!

And not excluding the times my best friend and I fought over the silliest things: Berlin being in West Germany or East Germany, my friend throwing a baby-tantrum because I demanded my pencil back from him so that I could teach him how to write music.

And our ploys: Pretending to be in WWII, printing out copies of Operation Valkyrie and greeting the teachers with ‘Heil!’ or ‘Herr Kommandant!’; Locating the school’s earthing connections (thanks to Mr. Hart!) and our latest, a plan to go on a quest for the Holy Grail! Wow! All this may seem childish to some, but to us it was, and is a matter of utmost importance!

Now, I realise, these memories are all we are going to be left with! Soon, we will pass out from this school, our hell, and our sanctuary (and sometimes our purgatory). We still have another year, but with the speed at which eleven have passed, what is one year but a candle in the wind?

We will miss every moment we have shared, my friends, my teachers. To you I say simply, you will always be in my heart. Let us make the time we have left the best of our lives!

Fruhlingsglaube...

Fruhlingsglaube is German for 'Faith in Spring'... it is verse written by German poet, Ludwig Uhland. I found its imagery very beautiful...

Die linden Lüfte sind erwacht, The gentle winds are awakened,
Sie säuseln und wehen
Tag und Nacht,
They murmur and waft
day and night,
Sie schaffen an allen Enden. They create in every corner.
O frischer Duft, o neuer Klang! Oh fresh scent, oh new sound!
Nun, armes Herze, sei nicht bang! Now, poor dear [heart], fear not!
Nun muss sich alles, alles wenden. Now everything, everything must change.
Die Welt wird schöner
mit jedem Tag,
The world becomes more beautiful
with each day,
Man weiß nicht,
was noch werden mag,
One does not know
what may yet happen,
Das Blühen will nicht enden. The blooming doesn't want to end.
Es blüht das fernste, tiefste Tal: The farthest, deepest valley blooms:
Nun, armes Herz, vergiss der Qual! Now, poor dear, forget the pain!
Nun muss sich alles, alles wenden. Now everything, everything must change.
